We continue to experience cool temperatures this summer; however, July and August promise to bring increased heat and humidity. In our previous article, we discussed the first five of ten tips for homeowners who want to improve the energy efficiency of their homes:

  1. Replace Old and Worn Windows and Doors
  2. Repair and Replace Old and Damaged Roofing
  3. Finish Your Home’s Basement
  4. Draw Shades Over Windows in Direct Sunlight
  5. Use Thermostat Effectively

In this post, we will conclude our list of tips for improving your home’s energy efficiency. This list is not exhaustive however, so feel free to contact us, if you have any other questions regarding energy efficiency and general contracting.

6) Install Spray Foam Insulation

Installing high quality spray foam insulation in your home’s attic and basement or crawlspace will reduce energy loss during summer and winter. However, it is important to make sure those spaces are properly conditioned; otherwise, moisture may accumulate and lead to the development of mold. Make sure you discuss spray foam insulation with a trusted general contractor, before proceeding with the project.

7) Properly Maintain Your HVAC System

Your heating and air conditioning system is the largest consumer of energy in your home. Proper maintenance is key to reducing energy consumption and improving its efficiency. Maintenance steps include:

  • Regularly changing air filters
  • Clearing unit of storm debris
  • Opening all vents
  • Checking for leaking refrigerant lines
  • Proper thermostat usage

8) Water Your Lawn in the Morning or Evening

Our lawns have received plenty of rain thus far, but when they do, you can reduce energy usage by watering in the morning before 10:00 am, or in the evening after 6:00 pm. When the temperatures are cooler, the ground can absorb more water, losing less to evaporation.

9) Repair Storm and Water Damage

If your home has been damaged by summer storms, flooding, or other causes, it is important to make repairs as soon as possible. Holes in roofing, walls, gutters, windows, etc., will contribute to significant energy loss. Water damage from flooding and leaks will contribute to increased humidity, causing your HVAC system to run more often, and can lead to the development of mold. 10) Repair Plumbing Leaks

A running toilet and faucet can lead to the loss of over a thousand gallons of water in a single month. If your plumbing appliances or pipes are leaking, you could be losing a significant amount of energy.

Maintenance and quick repairs are key to making sure your home is as efficient as possible. Energy efficient design and construction are important, if you are considering building a new home.
